Phaselis is one of the most enchanting archaeological sites of the Mediterranean — just 15 km from Kemer, with three natural harbours and ruins you can wander through with the sea at your toes. Founded around 690 BC by Rhodian colonists, this ancient port town attracts both history lovers and beachgoers, because the beach next to the Roman theatre is open for swimming.
A Brief History of Phaselis
Phaselis was founded around 690 BC and became a key trade hub of the Mediterranean. Alexander the Great visited in 333 BC and wintered here. The city kept its importance into the Byzantine period before Arab raids and pirate attacks led to its abandonment. Today the theatre, baths, aqueduct and main street are still visible and walkable.
How to Get There
- From Kemer by car — 15 min on the D400 coastal road, parking on site.
- Kemer dolmuş — head toward Tekirova and exit at the "Phaselis junction"; then a 1 km walk or shuttle bus.
- By boat — most Kemer boat trips include Phaselis harbour as a swim stop.
What to See at Phaselis
- Ancient Theatre — 3 000-seat, sea view, remarkably preserved.
- Hadrian's Gate — monumental arch built for the emperor's visit.
- Main Street (Plateia) — 125-metre marble avenue connecting two harbours.
- Roman Baths — frigidarium, tepidarium and caldarium are all visible.

Swimming at the Ancient Harbour
What sets Phaselis apart is the three natural beaches right next to the ruins. You can swim leaning against ancient harbour walls. The north harbour is shallow and family-friendly; the south one is deeper and best for snorkelling. Bring swimwear and a towel.
